SCAD Trip!
Really cool Head-Through-The-Hole Boards in front of one of the SCAD buildings! From left- Milo, Me (looking really bored, but I promise I wasn’t) and my mom. Photo taken by Lindsay Hadley.
A couple weeks ago, my parents and I went down to Savannah, Georgia to check out SCAD! (Savannah College of Art and Design) We went with family friends Lindsay Hadley (who used to be a professor at SCAD) and her son, Milo. We went for three days, and the actual school tour was on the last day.
I was pretty much sold on the school the first night we flew in. We got in late, and walked around the city for a bit to get our bearings. We stayed near Forsyth Park, in Savannah’s BEAUTIFUL South Historic District. The picture above shows us gazing, starstruck, into Art’s, which is a really cool SCAD cafe with a big red double decker bus inside that you can eat in. If you’re wondering why we look so bundled up, despite being in Georgia, that’s because the week we had scheduled randomly had record low temperatures (which, for Savannah, means low thirties.) despite the chill, though, I was pretty much sold on the city within the first half hour of being there. The whole time I was thinking “If the CITY is this cool on its own, how amazing is the actual SCHOOL going to be?!” (Spoiler: the MOST amazing.)
We went to all these cool restaurants and shops, like The Sentient Bean, (a sustainable, eco-friendly coffee shop) Strange Bird Savannah, (a tiny diner inside an old railway car) Fire street food (where I had the best bubble tea of my life) The Gallery Espresso, (with bagels of all kinds and really comfortable couches to sit on) The Grey, a fancy restaurant with live music, located in a refurbished Greyhound bus station, hence the name) and, of course, Art’s.
We also visited Ex Libris, one of the scad bookstores and also the most absolutely, mind-bogglingly amazing art supply stores I’ve ever seen. We ended up actually going there twice, since I loved it so much. I have SO MUCH SCAD merch now.
Me at Ex Libris :)
SO MANY MARKERS, also at Ex Libris.
I am so lucky to have such supportive friends and family to go with me on this endeavor. Having Lindsay and Milo with us was so fun, especially because we got our own little personal tour of the city from Lindsay, who lived in Savannah during her time as a SCAD professor.
Me, trying to look calm and collected despite sitting in the most artistic room I’d ever seen, waiting to start the tour of my dream college. My crazy eyes give me away, though. :)
On our last day in Savannah, we walked down to the building where the SCAD tour would begin. (Another cool thing about Savannah- everything is within walking distance) We waited in a really cool room with fun green couches and fancy murals on the walls (see photo above) for the tour to begin.
We rode a bus to all the SCAD buildings, residence halls, and through part of the city, and followed our guides through undoubtedly the coolest buildings I had ever been in in my life. It was AMAZING. Each building had amazing architecture, inspiring art installations, stuff hanging from the ceiling for people to swing on, etc. Even the DORMS were nice. Everything about the school and the campus made me want to be there and experience everything there was to experience. I was so inspired.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, (at least, some people do- I’ve never actually heard someone say that in normal conversation.) and SCAD really illustrated that point for me. I could talk and talk about how absolutely astounding it was, but at the end of the day, this photo really sums up how I felt about it.
I’m completely in love with SCAD now. It’s my dream school in every way. Our visit really showed me a whole new world of how awesome things can be! It inspired me to really work my butt off to get to SCAD, and that’s what I’m gonna do! I will be buttless forevermore. :)
Side note:
On our last day in Savannah, while walking back to our carriage house from the SCAD tour, this little piece of paper blew down the road and landed on my shoe…
Big thank you to my amazing parents, and to Lindsay Hadley and Milo Lisko, They are all amazing people, and I’m so glad to have them helping me on my journey to a higher education. Love you all!
P.S.: Don’t worry, I refuse to go into student loan debt. It’s going to be really hard to pay for college, especially a college as amazing as SCAD, and I’m going to need mega, MEGA scholarships to even think about going there, but I think I can do it :) Trying not to go into debt, YAY!!!
